Emmeline Joyce – Assistant Psychologist (Research)
Dr Emmeline Joyce is a Clinical Psychologist and the LT2 Trial Manager (Clinical Trial Manager) for Let’s Talk 2, based within the Psychosis Research Unit at Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH). Let’s Talk 2 is an NIHR-funded, multi-site randomised controlled trial evaluating a peer-delivered programme designed to reduce internalised stigma and disclosure-related distress, and to improve personal recovery for adults receiving care for psychosis.
In this role, Emmeline coordinates the day-to-day delivery of a complex multicentre trial, working closely with the Chief Investigators, participating NHS Trust sites and clinical teams, Peer Support Workers, and the supporting Clinical Trials Unit. She supports secure web-based randomisation and electronic data capture, coordinates recruitment monitoring and follow-up schedules, and contributes to quality assurance activities aligned with Good Clinical Practice (GCP), including checks on consent documentation, participant outcome measures, and timely data entry. Emmeline also supports communication and problem-solving across sites, helping ensure a consistent participant experience and robust trial governance.
Emmeline’s current work sits at the intersection of psychosis research, peer support, and stigma. Let’s Talk 2 is delivered across four NHS Trusts in England, the trial is designed to build real-world evidence for peer-led approaches that can be embedded within routine mental health care.
Emmeline’s earlier roles at the Psychosis Research Unit included Assistant Psychologist/Research Assistant posts supporting participant recruitment and psychological assessment work on studies such as the Bipolar At-Risk Trial (BART). She also gained experience in qualitative research as an honorary research assistant on the TEAMS trial (Think Effectively About Mood Swings), conducting semi-structured interviews exploring participants’ experiences of therapy and contributing to data management.
Alongside Let’s Talk 2, Emmeline has contributed to other NIHR-registered clinical trials in psychosis. She is listed as a main clinical contact for Talking With Voices II , a multisite randomised controlled trial evaluating a novel dialogical therapy for people distressed by persistent voices. She also contributed to the MAPS feasibility trial, which compared psychological intervention, antipsychotic medication, and combined approaches for adolescents experiencing a first episode of psychosis.
Emmeline completed a BSc in Psychology at The University of Manchester (First Class Honours, 2014) and an MSc in Clinical and Health Psychology (Distinction, 2015). She has authored and co-authored peer‑reviewed publications spanning qualitative methods, trial research, and health education, and is credited as part of the Psychosis Research Unit team supporting the Cognitive Behavioural Therapies for Psychosis eLearning programme.
In her spare time, Emmeline enjoys reading to unwind, with Mark Haddon and Zadie Smith among her favourite authors. Having grown up with dogs for much of her childhood, she has always had a strong love of animals and hopes to adopt rescue dogs in the future. She is also a vegetarian and enjoys discovering new recipes and spending time cooking when she can. Alongside this, Emmeline loves travelling and exploring different cities and countries whenever the opportunity arises.
