Alissa Miners

Research Assistant

Alissa Miners – Research Assistant

Alissa started her current role at PRU in January 2018. She splits her time between two research projects: ‘Talking with Voices’, and ‘PIERS’. Talking with Voices is a randomised control trial looking at whether is it feasible and acceptable to offer a new type of therapy known as ‘voice dialoguing’ to people who hear voices and are distressed by them.

PIERs is a feasibility study that is looking at whether it is feasible and acceptable to offer PEER delivered information sessions to people who are experiencing psychosis, and report negative experiences of stigma and discrimination.

Alissa completed her BSc in psychology at The University of Manchester in 2016. She chose to come to Manchester because it seemed like a lively city with lots going on, and she also had a big group of friends from Bristol living there.

Before University, Alissa worked as a shop assistant in a bakery, and also as a healthcare assistant on an acute mental health ward in Bristol.
Whilst completing her undergraduate degree, she also held a number of different posts including a waitress, a filing assistant, an E-Therapy volunteer for the SelfHelp Services, and a listening volunteer for Nightline.

In September 2016, Alissa got a job as a Trainee Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner in an IAPT service in Oldham. She found this role extremely rewarding, and particularly enjoyed working with young women who were struggling with problems such as anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. She also gained experience of working in a group setting, and co-facilitated weekly pain management groups alongside a physiotherapist.

In September 2017, Alissa joined PRU and volunteered two days per week on the Bipolar at Risk Trial BART. Here she attended weekly team meetings and got involved in a range of different administrative tasks. Alissa really enjoyed this post, and felt it gave her a great introduction into the life of a research assistant.

Outside of PRU Alissa enjoys going out for food and drinks and spending time with friends and family. Alissa is keen to pursue a career in clinical psychology.
